The meeting is named for the legendary Steve Prefontaine, America ’s greatest distance runner at the time of his death in 1975 at age 24. Pre’s remarkable life was the subject of an award-winning documentary, “Fire On The Track”, and two major motion pictures, “Prefontaine”, released by Disney in January 1997 (two “thumbs up” from Siskel & Ebert), and “Without Limits”, released by Warner Bros. in September 1998 (named as one of the  Top 10 films of 1998 by Time magazine and the New York Times.)

The 2010 meeting on Saturday, July 3, will be the 36th annual edition, with
NIKE providing title sponsorship for 27 consecutive years.  The meet will be televised live by NBC for ninety minutes, beginning at 1:30 p.m. PT., and internationally beginning at 1:00 p.m. PT.

Attendance at the meeting, held each year at historic Hayward Field in Eugene , Oregon , has traditionally been the largest in the United States , with crowds of over 12,000.  The past 13 Pre Classics have been standing-room-only, and another sell-out is anticipated this year.

Each year, the meeting has featured some of the greatest athletes in the world.  In 2010, athletes who have won a total of over 70 Olympic or World Championships gold medalists are expected to compete in the Prefontaine Classic.
